Weak Defense

The New Jersey Devils lacks thing, team defense throughout an entire 60 minute game. The defense will play rock solid for a portion of the game but they can never keep in going throughout the full 60 minutes. The Devils have a big hole to fill in their defensive core, even though rookie Defensemen Adam Larsson is fitting in well with the big club, they still lack a veteran offensive defensemen. Fans must wonder why the Devils are not getting rid of Bryce Salvador and calling up Alex Urbom or Matt Taormina. The reason here is simple, the Devils really lack Toughness on defense and if you get rid of Bryce Salvador, you don't have the element of toughness.

How many times during the game does the opposition have a player right in front of our goalies without anyone every clearing the crease? I can't count because there are too many times where there is an opposing player standing right in front of the goalie untouched. The only defensemen really see ever clearing the crease is Anton Volchenkov and sometimes Bryce Salvador. The puzzling question to all fans is this, how do we have the best PK in the league with such a bad defense? The answer is simple, they play together as a team on defense an support each other real well when trying to clear the puck and they block a lot of shots on the PK and get scoring opportunities shorthanded as a result. Also, our goalies have been absolutely spectacular on the PK.

The defense must play like they do on the PK while playing 5 on 5 or 4 on 4 and keep it going throughout the entire game. The defensemen need to make better 1st passes on the breakout too. In conclusion, the Devils need to somehow get better at defense whether its adding a defensemen via trade or bringing up some other defensemen from the farm team. Bottom line is the defense has been atrocious these past few games.
